Downton Abbey Season 1 & 2 Review

  • Please note this post may contain some spoilers.

I’ve heard so many times that Downton Abbey is a good serie but I didn’t pay attention. I have to admit that when I started watching it I couldn’t stop.

Downton Abbey is a TV serie settled in Yorkshire that present the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants during the beginnings of the XX century. Their actions are always conditioned by the historical events such as the First World War or the British social hierarchy. The main characters are Lord Grantham, his wife, Cora Crawley, and their children, Mary, Edith and Sybil. However, the servants have also their important role in the house which creates a big contrast between the two worlds, the aristocracy and the servants. There are so many characters in this serie, making the action more interesting due to the social barriers and events they face during the plot’s development.

The story starts with the Titanic accident in 1912. The heirs of the Crawley family has died in the sinking and the new heirs is a young lawyer, Matthew, who doesn’t fit well into the aristocratic world. The arrival of Matthew becomes the main success in the plot, catching the attention of everybody in Downton Abbey and influencing Mary’s marriage decision.

The locations and the atrezzo are very realistic and involves the audience during the hole episode (the landscapes are amazing). The dialogues are written perfectly so you discover the real personality and feelings of the characters step by step. The acting is also very good, my favorites actresses are Maggie Smith as Dowager Countess of Grantham and Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley.

I would like to outline two characters: Lady Mary Crawley and John Bates, the new servant. Lady Mary has to get married with the new heirs in order to maintain the goods of the family while Bates deals with his injury and his ex-wife. Their conflicts will guide the hole story.

Finally, I want to comment as well how the historical events are treated in the serie. The story it’s a drama but not melodrama. It faces the reality as it is and makes you realize how  history and war can change your life.

I hope you enjoy watching Downton Abbey as much as I do. What’s your favorite TV serie? Don’t hesitate to subscribe, like and comment!
